A true narrative of combat SITREP against a hostile enemy force in the republic of Vietnam 67/68
Ground, mechanize and airmobile combat operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Viet Nam. We participated in over 25 combat assault into hot LZ; Engaged hostile force sustaining casualties, KIA and WIA; Sustained and repealed combat attack by zapper combat units from North Viet Nam Army Regulars; Close combat, 47 enemy KIA; Recovering down helicopter; zenith of contact made during TET offensive in the area of Dak To, Hills 711/724, sustaining heavy casualty: Engaged in close combat, wounded in action, lost contact with reality, personal feelings, and meaning of life.
We have experienced combat operations against a hostile force in the RVN. Distressing trauma-related dreams and nightmares, stressful memories of war, traumatic experience, irritability, angry outburst, lost of interest at intercourse, depression, headaches, memory complaints, dizziness, vertigo, Tinnitus, aggression, anxiety, light and/or noise sensitivity, blurred or double vision, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, sleep disturbance and physical weakness, side effects of medicines for high blood pressure and heart disease. Exposed to Agent Orange and who knows what else. All documented on military and VA medical records.
We have killed the enemy in close combat during the TET Offensive in the Provinces of Dak To and Kontum. I participated combat patrols, ambushes and search and destroy missions, offensive maneuvers directed to killed or destroy the enemy in numerous airmobile combat assault, ground and mechanized combat sweeps in the Republic of Vietnam against hostile enemy force as follows.
The detonations caused by outgoing and incoming heavy artillery fire, mortars, grenade, claymore mines, C-4 high explosives detonation, and exposure to herbicide Agent Orange has always affected our overall medical health condition.

THE BATTLE OF DAK TO
We lost many soldiers like Joe Campbell, Jim McFadden, Tonni, Sosa, Pearson,Tate, Fiola, Greenwood and others (names I cannot remember but I can still see them death and wounded in battle) due to concentration of mortar and heavy/ light weapon enemy fire. I was also wounded in action.
“The Battle of Dak To ended as swiftly as it began. Enemy activity in the area died over-night as Hill 875 was captured. In Washington when Hill 875 was taken, General Westmoreland said the Battle of Dak To was "the beginning of a great defeat for the enemy."
Major General William R. Peers, 4th Division commander, stated that no one would ever know for sure how many NVA had been killed. He said if one counted those killed by air and artillery strikes and buried in hastily dug graves beneath the jungle floor, "I would say that we have killed a minimum of 3,000 and possibly as many as 4,000." While total enemy damage is impossible to assess there seems little doubt in the minds of the men who fought that they did indeed win the Battle of Dak To.
The first part was between Nov.3 and 12 as the 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry captured Hill 724 and other Ivy units, including the 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry had significant contacts, Mortar attacks and human wave assaults by the North Vietnamese characterized the Battle of Dak To. Over 1,600 NVA were killed by 4th Infantry Division and other Allied units. Ivy men scaled two important pieces of terrain around the Dak To headquarters — Hills 724 and 1338. The hills weren't taken easily, and everyone — including the defeated North Vietnamese forces, will long remember the heroic performances of Ivymen.
Two companies of NVA soldiers attacked a 4th Inf Div FSB north of Dak To early one morning but were driven back by the 3/8th Infantry. The enemy suffered 47 killed in the four-hour battle. The enemy opened the attack with rockets and small arms and automatic weapons fire, and then threw a human wave assault at the U.S. positions. The NVA soldiers occupied two U.S. bunkers, but the Ivymen altered with artillery and machinegun fire to defeat the attack. In other action men from the 4th Division killed 23 enemy soldiers.

KONTUM, WE WERE THEIR.
Body parts all over in that contact. The latest attack started sometime between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m., according to Lieutenant Colonel D. M. Malone, the battalion's com¬mander from Orlando, Fla. He estimated his unit fought off a battalion-sized enemy force. "They hit us on the northern side of the perimeter which is on a little connecting finger to another hill," explained LTC Malone. The NVA streamed up a steep hill onto the finger and spearheaded their charge with a satchel-charge-earring assault element. In turn, the Ivymen met the attack with every type weapon available.
"You name it and it was there in action," said Staff Sergeant William R. Bramlett of Columbia, S.C. "We had eight artillery batteries firing in support, plus helicopter gunship and tactical air strikes." A squat U.S. heavy machine-gun swung into action shortly after the battle began. "He really had some guts," one U.S. soldier commented. "All that stuff was flying around him and he was sitting in the gunner's chair blasting away."
The heroic gunner was killed by a direct rocket hit minutes after he had begun firing. The savage attack raged on until just after dawn when the remnants of the NVA force retreated down the trench and outside the perimeter. "We were receiving mostly sniper activity after about 7:30 a.m.," LTC Malone said. "Around 10 a.m. everything finally became quiet."

Here are some photos of my dad, Steve Osbrink, who served the 4th as a Combat Medic in '69. He passed away 6-DEC-09 due to a heart condition. He proudly sported the 4th's ivy crest patch on a couple of hats and still used his Dragoons Zippo. He passed down his love for the outdoors and for shooting to my brother and myself. A kind a loving man, he will be greatly missed.

This is a recent photo of my visits to the wall(2007). I served with the first platoon, Alpha Company in 1968 (March-August). SSGT Alto Anderson was my best friend. He was killed along with two combat engineers near Kontum Province 06/12/68. Alto Anderson (KIA) was a hero even before we met. Despite PTSD and no help from the 4th ID, I got my act together and was commissioned in the USAR as a 2LT in 1982 and rose to the rank of major. I also earned a PhD in chemistry from NYU Polytechnic in 1986. Today I am retired, but still think of Nam and my troops. I dedicate my success to my platoon and to SSGT Anderson.

I found a few photos of my Uncle Terry Johnston while going through some of my Grandmother's photo albums. He was in A/3/8 from August 1968 until his death in June of 1969. I have no idea of who is in the photos he took so any help would be greatly appreciated. As I come across more photos I will add them to the gallery. The first 4 photos are of him and the rest are guys he served with. UPDATE Added an additional 115 more photos I have scanned of various people that Terry tool photos of. If anyone has any idea how some of these people are, email me and I can change the caption on the photo. Thanks!
